Is medical marijuana / cannabis smoke really dire for the health of our lungs? How does it affect our chances of contracting lung cancer? If you are curios, and would like to hear what Dr. Donald Tashkin, Professor of Pulmonology at UCLA’s Geffen School of Medicine has to say check out this video, it gives an exceptional synopsis of what he has established over numerous years of researching the effects of marijuana smoke on the lungs. Dr. Donald Tashkin has been a pioneer in this field. Anti-cannabis groups have tried to silence him however, like a true scientist; he reports his findings in the name of scientific truth. The video is a bit long… and a little dry, but it’s worth the time it takes to view.
Notwithstanding these findings, most physicians still recommend that medical marijuana patients do not smoke their medication and instead use vaporizers, edibles, and/or tinctures. It is clear from this study that the damage that smoking tobacco can cause is significant (which we all knew before anyway!) and it can be worsened if you also smoke marijuana.
While I know there are people out there that think that Ron Paul is a complete nut. A lot of what he has to say makes perfect sense. Other parts...well, no one is perfect. Here is an interview I found of him on 20/20. A very insightful look into the man.
Q: In your 1988 campaign you said, “All drugs should be decriminalized. Drugs should be distributed by any adult to other adults. There should be no controls on production, supply or purchase for adults.” Is that still your position?
A: Yeah. It’s sor of like alcohol. Alcohol’s a deadly drug, kills more people than anything else. And today the absurdity on this war on drugs has just been horrible. Now the federal government takes over and overrules states where state laws permit medicinal marijuana 1 for people dying of cancer. The federal government goes in and arrests these people, put them in prison with mandatory sentences. This war on drugs is totally out of control. If you want to regulate cigarettes and alcohol and drugs, it should be at the state level. That’s where I stand on it. The federal government has no prerogatives on this.
Q: But you would decriminalize it?
A: I would, at the federal level. I don’t have control over the states. And that’s why the Constitution’s there.
With medical marijuana now legal in 15 states, and medical cannabis collectives popping up wherever they are not zoned out by city ordinances, I would say that Mr. Paul is looking good for 2012 as public sentiment seems to be leaning in his direction.
